Agriculture is one of the key sectors in Malaysia, accounting for about 8% of the GDP and 10% of the employment. It also provides food security, income, livelihoods and rural development for millions of Malaysians. It also plays a vital role in conserving natural resources, biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Malaysian agriculture needs to adapt to the impacts of climate change, natural disasters, pests and diseases, and competition from other countries. It also needs to embrace innovation, technology, diversification and value addition to enhance its productivity, profitability and competitiveness.
The government has a vision and plan for agriculture transformation, such as increasing the self-sufficiency level on vegetables to 70% by 2025. However, it requires the collaboration of all stakeholders such as farmers, consumers, businesses, civil society, academia and media to make this happen.
